Mechanical Design Leader

Location – Coventry HQ
Reporting to – Mechanical Design Manager

Ideal candidate will be able to relay their mechanical design / automotive BIW expertise to a design team allocated per particular project. Communication, people management and an appreciation of Expert Project procedure are key skills while working with internal / external designers, Expert Projects, Operations and technical customer contacts.

Key Responsibilities

  • Supporting management with day to day activities of the Mechanical Engineering office
  • Mentoring graduates/apprentices when required
  • Conducting Design risk assessment studies
  • Fulfilling CE documentation requirements, including GAs, lifting diagrams, noise tests, etc
  • Following the ‘Issued to Manufacture’ procedure
  • Completing Design kick-off procedures and required supporting documentation including product data, RFQs, etc
  • Controlling Design budget and timing (hours and commodity spend) for projects
  • Utilising management and communication skills when leading Process/RobCAD/Pneumatic Design/Projects
  • Scheduling and hosting internal and external Design reviews
  • Providing concept design support for Sales enquiries
  • Creating folder structures for both Design servers (J and P)
  • Approving 3D designs and drawings
  • Monitoring job hours where required and maintaining records

Skills and Attributes

  • Familiar with Expert Engineering Deliverables and Scope of Supply
  • Complete knowledge of Expert and JLR design standards
  • Catia competency for 3D/2D usage and FEA studies
  • Complete knowledge of Expert and JLR Commodity Standards libraries
  • Familiar with Expert Drawing Standards and GD&T (Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerances)
  • Familiar with M010 Mechanical Sequence Chart and knowledge of pneumatic design
  • Awareness of Master Tooling Tracker
  • Knowledge of BIW Joining techniques for VP and production, including weld, rivet and adhesive
  • Experience in Automation design
