Laser Tracking

Do you frequently carry out dimensional inspections of large equipment and have been using less sophisticated methods of doing so? Perhaps you’re looking to upgrade your laser tracking capabilities with the most modern, cutting-edge solutions available. Whatever the case may be, you’ve come to the right place as, here at Expert-AMT, we’re one of the leading designers and fabricators of advanced manufacturing, testing and inspection technologies.

Laser trackers are the most efficient tool for correctly aligning precision machinery. As a result, they are an invaluable addition to any production line or workshop where dimensional inspections are routinely performed. A laser tracker can measure one of two distance meter types – interferometer and absolute distance meter (ADM). Plus, they can do this with a near pinpoint degree of accuracy, far greater than simply “eyeballing” it or relying on traditional measurement techniques.

If you would like a laser tracker designed to your specifications, get in touch with Expert-AMT now by calling +44 2476 428 500

The Leading Developer of Laser Tracking Technologies

At Expert-AMT, we’re immensely proud of our status as the UK’s leading manufacturer of industrial automation systems, assembly tooling, special-purpose machinery, automated assembly, and single and multi-robotic cells. Established in 1972, we’ve been at the forefront of designing and manufacturing advanced manufacturing, testing, and inspection technologies for nearly five decades.

We possess a comprehensive range of advanced capabilities and state-of-the-art facilities that enable us to supply bespoke, high-spec inspection and testing technologies. If you’re in the market for laser trackers, you’ve come to the right place as laser inspection equipment is an area that we excel in. Inspection technologies play an important role in many areas of production and engineering. One example is precision machine alignment which is carried out to avoid safety issues, breakdowns, etc.

While more conventional methods take time and are far less accurate, laser trackers make short work of these inspections and provide results with near-perfect accuracy.

The Expert-AMT team are delighted to work with any client interested in laser tracking technologies. We are committed to designing, fabricating, and even deploying a world-class solution that will fit your company’s needs perfectly. Regardless of what sector you operate in, we have you covered as we’ve positioned ourselves carefully, ensuring that we can offer innovative solutions to the whole market.

And because of our process-oriented approach, you can be confident that the technologies we supply will be designed with your needs in mind.

Every technology we develop is cutting-edge and designed to be completely future-proof. So should your setup change or expand, your new laser tracker will remain an integral part of the setup moving forward.

    What are Laser Trackers?

A laser tracker is a piece of technology that’s designed to carry out dimensional inspection of large pieces of equipment, from stand-alone pieces to entire assembly lines. With a laser measurement device, entire setups, both internal and external, can be quickly and accurately inspected with the minimum amount of disruption caused. Customers won’t need to take apart anything, making laser tracking a fantastic time-saving investment.

The purpose of a laser tracker is to take precise large-volume measurements of assemblies, tooling, and parts. Laser trackers feature a large working radial volume and accuracies up to 0.001in. When used in combination with advanced software, laser tracking technologies can provide rapid-fast, accurate feedback in real-time.

This makes laser trackers ideal for precision machine alignments, such as:

Such components and machines are often found in manufacturing and engineering setups and must be calibrated to ensure safety and performance. Laser trackers can also be used to provide feedback on critical geometry controls, making them useful for field machining. Said controls include cylindricity, circularity, parallelism, and planarity. Laser trackers simply cannot be beaten for precise measurements, no matter the circumstances.

    How Do Laser Tracks Work?

Laser trackers work by measuring two angles and a distance. The laser is aimed at a retro-reflective target that’s held against whatever object is to be measured. The path is retraced as the light is reflected, and it then re-enters the laser tracker at the same position it left. As the light re-enters the laser tracker, some of it goes to a distance meter. The distance meter measures the distance from the tracker to the SMR. At this stage, one of two distance meter types may exist – interferometer or absolute distance meter (ADM).

Absolute distance meter or ADM provides the added benefit of it being a ‘point and shoot’ system, which makes it a far simpler version to work with. The distance to the target is measured automatically, and this occurs even if the beam has previously been broken. The semiconductor laser produces infrared light that reflects off the SMR and re-enters the laser tracker, at which point it’s converted into an electrical signal.

Internal circuitry analyses the signal, determining the time of flight and multiplying this value by the speed of light in the air. This gives you the distance from the tracker to the SMR.

Distance measurements can be either absolute or incremental. An interferometer is used to obtain incremental measurements along with a frequency-stabilised helium-neon laser. Absolute measurements, as discussed above, have undergone something of a transformation in recent years. However, the accuracy of ADM is now easily on par with interferometers.

    Benefits of Using Laser Trackers

There is a multitude of reasons as to why you should be using laser trackers versus traditional methods. Precision is possible, even in an external environment where every variable cannot be controlled. Laser technology advancements allow for a level of precision that far exceeds what’s possible with traditional methods of metrology. This results in benefits, such as:

    • Versatile Mount
    • Small, Lightweight Design
    • Easy to Use
    • Continuous Point Measurement
    • Super-Fast Single Point Measuring
    • Highest Precision and Accuracy

Thanks to the versatile mount, the laser tracker can be positioned upside down, sideways, or directly on the part being measured. And thanks to the small, lightweight design, laser trackers are portable, so they can be easily carried out into the field.

A single operator can operate laser trackers with a computer. While a two-person crew is recommended for efficiency, this flexibility does make laser trackers an accessible option for one person alone. In addition, through continuous point measurement, points can be measured continuously, enabling the tracking of critical areas, thermal growth and shrinkage, moving machinery, etc. This is all possible without the need for human interference.

Modern laser trackers can record 3-axis measurements in a fraction of a second, enabling super-fast single point measuring. Combine a tracker with additional accessories, and it’s possible to mass-collect data points.

No other technology can provide the degree of precision that laser trackers can outside of a controlled laboratory environment. Laser trackers are considerably more accurate than optical measurement because of a real-world tolerance of one-thousandth of an inch. Optical measurement is subject to human error and measurement variations that don’t impact laser tracking.
